An alternative advent calendar
Many of us don't think about planting in winter but by doing so, we can grow some hardy veg, bring in a splash of colour and also, plant bulbs for spring flowering.
We can bring some colour to our gardens, patios or front door steps quite easily with plants such as cyclamen, berries and evergreens.

Many garden centres are selling winter baskets which provide some welcome colour, or you can of course create your own!
Don't forget the veg!
If you have an outdoor space, even if it's small, don't forget that there are plenty of hardy veg that can be grown over winter. This includes lettuce, carrots, chard, onions, garlic, leek and kale.
Bulbs for spring colour
We might be a little late to the party but why not plant a few late bulbs for some spring colour in your garden?
With the weather being much milder than usual, while autumn is the best time to plant bulbs, you can possibly still get away with planting before the frost and still get a pop of colour later in spring.
Daffodils, tulips, crocus, grape hyacinths and fritillarias are just some of the plants to choose from.

You can also plant them in pots outside if you don't have a big garden and can also give them as gifts as indoor plants.
Another real advantage of planting now is that a lot of garden supply shops will be selling them off more cheaply so you can bag a bargain.
